Why make the switch to LED?

The energy savings are immediate and with the rebate incentives the ROI is generally within 2 years. With the recent introduction of commercially viable LED bulbs and fixtures, businesses can expect unprecedented savings in their energy costs for lighting.

What is the saveONenergy RETROFIT PROGRAM?
The RETROFIT PROGRAM provides substantial financial incentives to encourage the replacement of existing equipment with energy efficient equipment and new control systems that will provide cash flow savings and improve the efficiency of your operational procedures and processes.
What type of businesses can participate?
All kinds of businesses can participate: Commercial, institutional, agricultural and multi-residential facilities, including social housing.
What are the eligibility requirements?
The RETROFIT PROGRAM is open to owners and tenants of:

  • Commercial spaces or buildings, such as offices, retail and grocery stores, restaurants, hotels and warehouses.
  • Institutional buildings, including hospitals, universities, municipal halls and arenas.
  • Multi-family buildings, such as apartments (including social housing) or condominiums.
  • Agricultural facilities, including dairy, swine or poultry farms, greenhouses and nurseries.

To take part, your project must be eligible for a minimum Prescriptive incentive of $100 to apply. For the Engineered or Customs measures, your project must have an estimated demand reduction of greater than or equal to 1kW and/or first-year annual savings of greater than or equal to 2,000 kWh.

What kind of energy efficient projects may qualify?
All kinds of energy efficient projects may be able to participate such as: replacing old lights with new energy efficient lights, putting in lighting controls, redesigning HVAC, replacing Chillers adding variable speed drives for pumps and fans and improvement of thermal performance of a building envelope through measures such as increased insulation, installation of high performance windows and frames, low emissive window glazing or low emissive roof barriers.
What incentives are being provided?
There are three application tracks you can choose from:

Prescriptive – simple, predefined measures with per-unit incentives
Engineered – using pre-defined worksheets for lighting, compressed air, unitary AC, VSD on Fans and VSD on Pumps
Custom – for more complex innovative measures not covered in other tracks

Who should I contact for additional information?
Contact your local electric utility for complete details.
Can Industrial businesses participate in the program?
Yes, energy efficient lighting projects in Industrial facilities can go through RETROFIT PROGRAM
If I have previously participated in Power Saving Blitz will I be eligible for the RETROFIT PROGRAM?
If I have previously participated in Power Saving Blitz will I be eligible for the RETROFIT PROGRAM?
Yes, if you have previously participated in Power Saving Blitz you would still be eligible as long as you are not replacing the same equipment installed in the Power Saving Blitz.
Who is the Ontario Power Authority (OPA)?
The Ontario Power Authority is responsible for ensuring a reliable, sustainable supply of electricity for Ontario. Its key areas of focus are planning the power system for the long term, leading and coordinating conservation initiatives across the province, and ensuring development of needed generation resources.
Why is the OPA doing this?
Energy conservation is Ontario’s most cost-effective resource and also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing electricity consumption helps businesses manage their energy costs and reduces demand on the electricity system.

The RETROFIT PROGRAM was designed to encourage businesses to invest in energy efficiency upgrades.

A LED FOR EVERY NEED

Today, there is a large selection of LED bulbs, fixtures and arrays for many types of installations. So there is no reason to wait. The savings are immediate, the paybacks are generally between one and three years, and in many cases, the quality of the lighting is noticeably improved.

LEDS REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS TOO

Since LEDs typically last four to nine times longer than other lighting sources, you don’t have to change them as often. That’s especially important in outdoor or high-bay areas where cranes or lifts are required to reach the fixtures.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A REBATE?
The RETROFIT PROGRAM is open to owners and tenants of:

  • Commercial spaces or buildings, such as offices and office towers, retail and grocery stores, restaurants, hotels and warehouses.
  • Institutional buildings, including hospitals, universities, municipal halls and arenas.
  • Multi-family residential, such as apartments (including social housing) and condominiums.
  • Agricultural facilities, including dairy, swine or poultry farms, greenhouses and nurseries.
I'M A COMMERCIAL TENANT IN A LONG TERM LEASE AGREEMENT , I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE LIGHTING IN THE FACILITY, WOULD I QUALIFY FOR A REBATE?
To be eligible, the utility account must be in your name, meaning you pay that bill. There can’t be any arrears on the account. If both these conditions are met, then you are free to pursue a saveONenergy rebate.
WHY LED LIGHTING FOR MY FACILITY?
  • LEDs (Light emitting diodes) are an evolutionary step forward in lighting technology from the energy inefficient and delicate fixtures of the past. In addition to their increased efficiency over legacy technologies, here are a few of the other advantages of LEDs: • Their compact size makes LEDs more versatile
  • Low heat dissipation means lighting can often be closer to the object being lit, and also reduces overall air conditioning requirements
  • LED lighting is “immediately on” and starts at full brightness
  • LED lights are fully dimmable
  • LED lighting is ideal for outdoors and performs well in both heat and cold
  • A selection of vivid colours are available
  • As an added safety factor, LEDs operate at low voltage
WHERE CAN LED LIGHTING MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT MY FACILITY?
Because of their long life, LEDs should first be considered in areas where lighting is required for substantial periods of time. Because of their low-heat output, efficiency,  and small size, LEDs should be candidates for:

“Always on” locations such as:

  • Lobbies, hallways, stairs, exit signs
  • Parking lots and other outdoor lighting
  • Commercial signage
  • Freezer cases, fruit and vegetable displays
  • Retail display cases
  • Restaurants and entertainment facilities
WHY WOULD I NOT USE MY MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL TO CHANGE LIGHT FIXTURES AS THEY BURN OUT, INSTEAD OF DOING A COMPLETE RETROFIT?
Though you will receive incremental benefits from the replacement of old/inefficient fixtures in your facility, by pursuing a piecemeal strategy of improvement you will be ineligible for a saveONenergy rebate, as well as losing the economies of scale LEDdirect can provide when supplying fixtures.
